Walking out of the MCG with 100,000 screaming fans after watching the 49ers roll the Rams 27-7, one thing was undeniable, Australia is built for American Football.
As Director of Sport Creative and an absolute sports fanatic, I’ve spent my life chasing the world’s biggest sporting moments.
Seeing the Tailgate village transform Yarra Park, watching massive lines snake around the merch trucks hours before kick-off, and feeling that electric hum inside the MCG’s ring of steel as the sun hit the gridiron turf was completely surreal.
But what made the week truly fascinating was how both franchises handled the trip.
San Francisco didn’t just play here, they moved in. The Faithful completely painted the city scarlet and gold. From throwing down open fan activations to pub takeovers and legend Jerry Rice soaking up the Melbourne energy, the 49ers embraced the city with open arms. The Rams? They completely missed the chance to win over an insane Aussie fanbase.
That cultural disconnect showed on the field. The 49ers played with the energy of a home crowd, while the Rams looked completely flat-footed under the MCG lights.
Having regular-season NFL action on our doorstep was historic. But if last month proved anything, it’s that this was merely an appetizer. A 100k crowd in Melbourne is epic, but it pales in comparison to the electric, week-long spectacle of the real deal on American soil.
Which brings me to what’s next.
